Pond farming requires a holistic approach to culture system management due to the complex ecological network within a pond. There are several aspects that need to be considered including water, sessile bacteria on suspended solids and sludge. The combination of which is called the pond microbiome. Subsequently the microbiome has a direct effect on gut microbiota of shrimp and fish.
The solution that we are working towards in this collaborative project covers:
• Monitoring
• Machine learning processes to determine correct trigger limits
• Solutions – treatment and dosing to modify the culture environment

The research partners have chosen Indonesia as their pilot region. We collected samples from ponds and processed them through KYTOS’ flow cytometry system, to determine total bacterial count as well as the relative abundance of vibrios. The flow cytometry system can also determine algal species. When ponds start to become imbalanced, the populations of bacteria start to shift. Within this project we are also looking at alternative methods of microbiome analysis to deliver a cost-effective and high-quality solution to industry.
